Meals On Wheels

The Emerald Isle Immigration Center’s Meals On Wheels program provides daily meals to local Seniors who are unable to prepare meals for themselves due to an age related disability or illness. The meals are delivered daily by a group of dedicated volunteers. We are always seeking new volunteers so please contact us at 718-324-3039 ext. 102 if you are interested or if you know of someone who would like to become a meal recipient. This program is generously funded by NYS Senator Jeff Klein and the New York State Department Of Aging (NYS DOA).

For many locals our trusted Meals on Wheels program is a valuable part of their day. The volunteer or staff member who shows up in all seasons with a hot meal and a warm smile might be the only person they see or speak with. This special contact is a daily source of hope, it also acts as a valuable source of social interaction and companionship. Safety is also a major concern for many and along with the inevitable impacts of aging come the increased risks of falls, medical emergencies and other accidents. The daily safety check that accompanies each meal delivery by our volunteers ensures that, in the case of an emergency or problem, medics will be called, emergency contacts will be notified and the seniors, homebound, or those in need in our community will not be forgotten.

Having adequate nutrition is ultimately necessary for health, functionality and the ability to remain independent. Eating healthily can also increase mental acuity, resistance to illness and disease, energy levels, immune system strength, recuperation speed and the ability to manage chronic health problems.
