Welcome to New York and The Emerald Isle Immigration Center!

We hope your stay will be safe and enjoyable. We have compiled this information booklet for your stay here in New York City. This has been compiled in response to the questions we are asked on a daily basis. If this is your first trip the enclosed package may be of some help to you.

Our package includes information on the J1 Program, accommodation, transportation, as well as many useful numbers and websites for you to use. Please note that the information included herein is provided for informational purposes only. It is not an exhaustive list, nor does inclusion in this package imply any type of endorsement of the services provided by the EIIC.

Please let this informational booklet be a useful guide for your stay. If you need more information, which is not currently contained in the attached, please feel free to call or drop into one of our centers nearest you.

NYIC NY Dream Fellowship Program

The New York Immigration Coalition, in partnership with the Fund for Public Advocacy, is proud to announce that we are now accepting applications for the 2013 DREAM Fellowship Program. In the spring 2012 semester, the NYIC had the privilege of supporting the inaugural cohort of ten talented DREAM Fellows, who were awarded scholarships toward their CUNY tuition, engaged in leadership development trainings, and gained on-the-ground experience in internships with several of the NYIC’s member organizations. It was an enriching and inspirational experience for the students and participating organizations alike, and we are thrilled to announce another DREAM Fellowship cycle for the 2013 spring semester.

We encourage you to share this opportunity with DREAM Act-eligible college students you know who could benefit from this opportunity! The application is now available on our website here.

What is the DREAM Fellowship Program?

The Dream Fellowship Program is a semester-long leadership development program, initiated jointly by the New York Immigration Coalition and the Fund for Public Advocacy. In its first semester in the Spring of 2012, ten college-level DREAM Act eligible student leaders were selected for the fellowship, which included leadership development trainings, internships at community organizations and $2,000 scholarships toward tuition at City University of New York.

The leading impetus for the Fellowship was a vibrant and growing immigrant youth movement. With almost no paid staff, no lobbyists, and few financial resources, undocumented immigrant youth and immigrant communities galvanized a historical movement for passage of the DREAM Act. In the aftermath of Congress’s failure to act, a new sense of urgency emerged. However, DREAMers faced the challenge of continuing to fight for their rights, while still excluded from most of the educational, financial and leadership opportunities their peers had, simply because of their immigration status. To address this disparity, recognizing the tremendous talent and leadership potential of these young people, the NYIC and the Fund for Public Advocacy created the DREAM Fellowship, a program that combines financial assistance with leadership training and hands-on field work.

Irish Universities Fall Open House Events

 

Education in Ireland will be hosting a series of ‘Irish Universities Open House’ events on the East coast from October 10-14. These are all free events which are open to students, parents and college counselors interested in learning more about undergraduate programs and other study opportunities at Irish universities.

DREAM Summer 2012 Application available

Note: Applications are due March 30, 2012!

Dear Members and Friends,

While we are building exciting momentum for the passage of New York State DREAM legislation, I want to let you know about another fantastic way to support DREAM youth.

When the DREAM Summer was launched for the first time last year, this national scholarship and fellowship program brought together over 100 DREAMers nationwide for scholarships and pretty amazing fellowship opportunities. Over 100 or so fellows were selected from a pool of over 1,000 applicants and they were connected to various community organizing and service initiatives, giving them valuable opportunities that many DREAMers have not had access to.

The host organizations got the benefit of having a talented DREAMer for 10 solid weeks. The NYIC hosted a DREAMer and it was so, so wonderful. It does take a bit of investment from the host organization, but it’s really, really worth it.  Please click HERE for more information – both for DREAMers who are interested in applying, and host organizations who are interested in sponsoring.
